"The Fraternal Order of
Woodworker’s" organization
was
instituted on April 16th, 2004 by concerned members
from Local 20, 45,
157, 608, 926, 2090 in the
New
York City District Council of Carpenters. From all the
support, we have helped to preserve our union and protect the trade.
With over three hundred active woodworking carpenters pulling
together, we have helped make our union prosperous for all sisters
and brothers. As a group, we are "raising the standard" of
architectural woodwork and forging ahead to preserve this honorable
craft.
The
"Fraternal Order of Woodworkers" provides the opportunity
for union carpenters who have a love for this fine
craft, to get together and share the things we all have in
common. We offer all members a place for education, good times,
friends and support. At our monthly gatherings, we also discuss
important current issues that affect all our members. We always have
a good turnout for our charity drives and fishing
trips. We must try to keep the pride, integrity and
tradition of this great craft alive.
In
2006 the F.O.W. embarked on a mission to curtail the use of the
hazardous product known as Medium-Density
Fiberboard.
"MDF"
must be handled under safer guidelines. This cancer causing
product is being used and cut everyday on our job sites putting
all workers at risk. Union Carpenters will lead the fight to
help have this product banned at the work place and homes
across America. We have been in contact with industrial hygienist's
and doctors from Mount. Sinai who have guided us in
our efforts to help protect all workers. We have had responses from
City Hall and NYCDCC on this vital matter. We hope that 2009 will
hold some promise to ban or
at least curtail this
issue.
The "Union Label" is something that all union
members should hold in high regard. It took many years and
perseverance to make it mandatory to stamp all union made products.
The F.O.W. is committed to protect and defend this mark of our
great history. We support the mandatory “Steward Stamp Number Report” initiated
by the delegates of The New York City District Council of Carpenters
back in 2006. This helps to safeguard architectural woodwork
production installation and handling in the New York City district.
Always check for the union
stamp.
Through
our commitment, experience, and respect for the profession, the
Fraternal Order of Woodworker’s have established relationships that
will last a lifetime!
Over the past five years, we have
enjoyed unity, and union solidarity. With our monthly guest
speakers, fishing trips, charity work and camaraderie, we as a
group, are a necessary part of this great union. All union
carpenters are welcome to join, but must be sponsored by a current
member.
We
would like to thank everyone who has helped to make the F.O.W. a
success over the last five years! Our guest speaker’s,
Hilti, Festool, DeWalt, Local 2090 and many
others who participated, are deeply
appreciated.
"We
should not lose sight of our character as a trade union, and sink
ourselves into a mere benevolent society or insurance company ... We
must elevate the craft, protect its interests, advance wages, reduce
the hours of labor, spread correct economic doctrines and cultivate
a spirit of fraternity among the working people regardless of creed,
color, nationality or politics."
Peter J.
McGuire.
